Stencils and Raves!

These images have been created by combining two great passions of art and photography. The stencils have been drawn and cut to create my own stencils and back illuminated by a rave torch. These torches are primarily used at gigs but are great for light painting.

Spirographs

As a child one of my favourite toys was a Spirograph. The gears circulating around larger or smaller ones always fascinated me. The mathematically perfect shapes and patterns that came to life on paper were intriguing.

Transferring this from a pen-based art, to light painted images was a natural phenomenon.  The gears became torches and homemade light modifier, pens coloured cellophane filters.  By placing my camera directly under a suspended and rotating a torch I was able to replicate, to some degree the patterns of spirographs reminiscent of my youth.   Perfect symmetry was never achievable, due to rotational irregularities. However, the resulting asymmetrical patterns are more animated and dynamic.  Long exposures facilitated the interchange of filters and modifiers within the image.  This created harmonious colour combinations and contrasting textures.

Petri Dish Patterns

My panel focuses on the chemical reaction between acrylic inks, saliva and household cleaning products.

As these chemicals combine and cool, they are transformed into natural patterns and forms.

The circular nature of the work is fashioned from petri dishes and the use of a scanner gives a microscope-like view.
