Alexandra Prescott

MA, FRPS

I picked up a camera as a child.

Eventually, realising that my snaps said nothing, I knuckled down to learn about the exposure triangle, bought a DSLR and moved off auto. In January 2017 I joined the RPS and gained my licentiate. In the summer of 2017, I began a Masters Course in Contemporary photography and graduated with a distinction. That gave me the confidence to carry on and in 2021 I became a Fellow of the RPS.

I like to create awareness with contemporary bodies of work, my Masters Project, called Trophies, spoke about the curatorship of animals and how their sentience was ignored. My Fellowship Panel spoke of the ‘Universal Truths’ of pollution, disrespect, greed and cruelty which affect the creatures with whom we share the planet.

More recent projects include ‘Love and the Pollinator’ which explores the Cut Flower market and recently completed book ‘The Private Life of the Fishing Fleet Harbour’ a tangible homage to a changing industry and disappearing way of life. Ongoing projects include – ‘The Good, the bad and the ugly’ – human / animal interactions and ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities’ – a photographic interpretation

If I can make one person change their behaviour or ask questions with my images then I deem them to have been a success. And I still take photographs of anything else that interests me. The postman calls me the ‘bone lady’ due to the number of parcels with animal remains I receive.

Cabinet of Curiosities

The Cabinet of Curiosity emerged in the 16th Century – collections of the rare and strange. Stored in cabinets and rooms they became the  precursor to Museums. My own collection, started in childhood and  becoming increasingly fragile. Artists  used to paint  the subjects for posterity and academic  books. I am photographing mine, with detail but not in a museum style.

Interactions.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Ethical animal husbandry is based on the ‘intrinsic value’ of animals, and animal welfare / care principles. Your personal beliefs will interpret the good, the bad and the ugly in these images.
